Racine police say a 17-year-old girl is facing misdemeanor charges after she was involved in a fight during which she sprayed herself in the face with pepper spray.

Maya Arebalo, of Racine, was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with one misdemeanor count each of disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. If convicted, she faces up to a year in jail and/or up to $11,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called at 12:55 a.m. Thursday to the 1100 block of Memorial Drive for a report of a fight and someone possibly with a gun. When officers arrived, they found 20 people yelling at each other and throwing things.

Police say Arebalo threw a bottle at a crowd of people, and when they tried to detain her, Arebalo cursed at them and said she would return to the area “to (expletive) people up.” During the struggle to restrain Arebalo, she said she was sprayed in the face with pepper spray, but witnesses say Arebalo brought the pepper spray to the fight. When she tried to use the pepper spray on someone, it was facing her instead, and Arebalo ended up spraying herself in the face.

Arebalo was assigned a $1,000 signature bond during her initial appearance Thursday. She will next be in court Sept. 8 for her pre-trial conference.
