If convicted on all charges, Casas faces up to 44 years in prison and/or up to $76,000.
Woman Held Against Her Will
According to the criminal complaint: Caledonia Police were called to an apartment at 4042 Main St. at 3:27 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a car theft. A woman told police Casas, who is her ex-boyfriend, woke her up at 3 a.m. by banging on her window. Casas, who had been out drinking on his birthday and wanted to have sex with the woman. When she refused, he called her derogatory names. The woman went to bed after she convinced Casas to crash on her couch.
But she later woke up to him on top of her and pointing a gun at her.
“Jose told (the woman) he was thinking of taking (the woman) with him to go kill himself,” the complaint reads.
The woman watched Casas load the 9mm gun. He told the woman that she ruined his life and he grew more agitated at her. She told Casas to leave and eventually the woman tried to call some of his family to pick him up. But no one answered the call and Casas told her to hit him.
“I kept asking him to stop, but he kept repeating that I ruined his life and he was going to kill me too,” the woman told police.
Casas Threatens To Commit Suicide
Making suicidal threats, Casas no longer allowed her to use his phone. But eventually she called 911. Realizing this, Casas ran out of the apartment, took her car keys and her Nissan Sentra.
The officer had dispatch put out an attempt to locate Casas and notify the Kenosha Police Department of the incident since he lived in Kenosha. Officers with the Kenosha Police Department found the car at his residence in the 5000 block of 28th Avenue. The Kenosha Police officer told the Caledonia officer that they weren’t sure whether the person inside was Casas.
Because he made suicidal and homicidal statements, and had a gun, the Kenosha SWAT team arrived on scene. They also learned that Casas — a convicted sex offender with a warrant out for his arrest — had a suspended driver’s license.
Eventually Casas’ brother called him and convinced him to turn himself in voluntarily. He was taken to the Racine County Jail.
Racine County Circuit Court Commissioner Alice Rudebusch set a $25,000 cash bond and a preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. Aug. 31.
