Take to the water in Racine County this weekend. There are a pair of river events plus a community fun day, a watermelon celebration and living history. Come along with Real Racine.
Doing it with cardboard. Combine cardboard, duct tape and creativity to get the 4th Annual Cardboard Boat Race and Regatta at Harbor Lite Yacht Club, 559 State St. Individuals, teams and business sponsors are welcome. If you don’t have time to build a boat, the organizers will set you up with an artist through the Racine Arts Council. Boat building runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the club. Racing in the Root River for cash prizes gets under way at 3 p.m. followed by the Regatta Parade. The State Street drawbridge is a great place to watch the action. It’s super! It’s a bird, it’s a plane… no, it’s Super Saturday in Union Grove! The day kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday in Downtown Union Grove with continuous free, family entertainment, including the Kids are People Too show, Racine Zoo presentation, the Fairytale Princess Company and a doggy fashion show. There are also local crafters and vendors, kids’ face painting and tractor-pulled wagon rides. The day ends with the Kiwanis Club’s annual street dance, featuring Rachel Lee and Weird Science, at Village Square Park starting at 6 p.m. Visit http://ugsupersaturday.com/
Melon time. A September tradition is Swan’s Watermelon Festival. This year’s event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Swan’s Pumpkin Farm, 5930 Hwy. H, Caledonia. New this year is the Best Dressed Watermelon Contest with judging at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. A free registration car show is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday with dash plaques to the first 50 entries. By water and land. Ride a bicycle, paddle a canoe or kayak or do both at Pedal, Paddle & Play from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. Sunday from Burlington’s Wehmhoff Jucker Park. Cyclists are invited to ride the Seven Waters Trail from Burlington to Waterford and paddle back down the Fox River. Four stops along the way will have live music. Free shuttles for watercraft and bicycles are available. Registration is $20; kids ages 10 and younger are free with an adult registration. History comes alive. Go back in time from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Caledonia Heritage Festival presented by the Caledonia Historical Society. Caledonia Historical Park (Linwood Park), 7300 Five Mile Road, is the site for Civil War reenactments, sawmill and blacksmithing demonstrations, live music and local history at the 1877 Caledonia Town Hall, the 1902 Corliss railroad depot, the 1840s log cabin, the 1919 barn and the Meyers Museum. There will be food and local vendors both days plus a nondenominational church service on Sunday morning. Admission is $5 per vehicle.
