Assembly Speaker Robin Vos plans to once again introduce legislation that will limit early voting, he says, to make availability more uniform across the state.
U.S. District Court Judge James Peterson last July struck down a number of provisions of the state’s voter ID laws, including restrictions on limited hours and locations for early voting, according to a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, because he was convinced the laws were aimed at minorities and, therefore, unconstitutional.
Vos’ stance is that voting integrity is challenged because early voting availability is up to each municipality instead of being uniform across the state.
“We’re probably going to have to look at it again to make sure that everybody in the state has the same chance to vote,” he is quoted as saying in a new J/S story.
But, state Sen. Jon Erpenbach, D-Middleton, curtly dismissed Vos’ reasons for addressing early voting, the story continues.
“Republicans don’t want early voting because they suck at early voting,” he told the newspaper. “It’s not an advantage (for Democrats); it’s the law. And when things don’t go the way Republicans want, they change the law.”
