Dogs who need furever homes will soon have a space where they can connect with their potential families.

Local dog rescue group Woof Gang Rescue has secured a building at 1535 Layard Avenue, a former lumber yard where they will host meet-and-greet events for folks looking to add a dog to their family.

“We are so excited,” WGR Executive Director and Founder Jodie Hoffman told Racine County Eye Wednesday. “I think this is going to be great for the community and great for us.”

She hopes to have the building ready to open its doors by Dec. 1.

City of Racine officials Wednesday approved the necessary conditional use permit. Next up is the occupancy permit so Hoffman and her dedicated group of volunteers – and anyone else who wants to pitch in – can turn the vacant building into a warm space where potential family members can get to know one another.

WGR is a foster-based rescue with 147 volunteers who regularly take in dogs from throughout the greater Racine area and beyond as well as travel to high-kill shelters to bring dogs to Wisconsin to find families.

Hoffman said the building needs work like paint, new flooring and kennels. She envisions the building serving as a space where neighbors from across the area can come and meet and play with dogs that rotate in and out while staying based in the WGR foster system.

“The foster homes are going to be able to have the option to bring and drop their dogs off so people can come in and play with them throughout the day and meet some of the adoptables,” she added.

The new building will also get used as a connection space where people can meet their potential new fur-family.

“We also plan to host adoption events here, to give even more dogs the chance to find permanent new homes,” Hoffman said.

In addition to physical help like cleaning the new building, pitching in to paint and lay the flooring as well as set up a dog run in the back, Hoffman said donations – both monetary and supplies – are always appreciated.

Woof Gang Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3), so donations are tax deductible and can be completed through PayPal.

Volunteers who want to pitch in to help Hoffman and her WGR fosters get the new building ready, can contact her through the WGR website.
