William Dow

A Caledonia man stole four knives from Menard’s, then used the blades to threaten the people who tried to stop him during an armed robbery, according to a criminal complaint filed today in Racine County Circuit Court.

William Dow, 40, is charged with armed robbery, obstructing an officer and misdemeanor bail jumping in the Friday incident.

The complaint states that police were sent to Menard’s at 11:11 a.m., for a report of a shoplifting in progress. The suspect – Dow – had reportedly stolen several items from the store and was walking outside. A short time later, the police learned the man was running and that he had knives on him.

Dispatch reported the man concealed multiple knives as he walked through Menard’s, and then pulled a 4-inch knife on a loss prevention officer who tried to stop him.

Police found Dow hiding beneath a parked car, and ordered him out at gunpoint. He was arrested about 11:15 a.m.

Menard’s staff told Mount Pleasant police that Dow was suspected of taking six items while in the store – a pair of needle-nose pliers, four knives and a package of batteries. The items were worth $138.92.
