A City of Racine employee has died following a car versus garbage truck crash that happened Wednesday morning on Washington Avenue at Oregon Street.

Mark Gates, who worked for the City’s Public Works solid waste department, died Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a speeding vehicle. He was collecting recyclables at the time of the crash, said City of Racine Mayor John Dickert.

“Mark was a highly respected and dedicated employee as well as a deeply faithful and caring pastor, and he will be missed by all who knew him,” he said.

Dickert reminded the public to be mindful of all city workers whose jobs take them into the streets.

“We all need to slow down and be aware of those with whom we share the road,” he said.
