Police forcibly took a man into custody after he ran from them because he wanted to make a phone call before his arrest, according to a criminal complaint.
Steven A. Jedkins, 26, of Caledonia, is charged with resisting an officer and escape for the Wednesday incident.
According to court records, an officer on patrol near 3 Mile Road and Charles Street in Caledonia did a registration check on a vehicle, which showed the owner, Jedkins, had a suspended driver’s license. The officer stopped the vehicle, and approached to speak with the driver.
Jedkins was driving, the complaint states, and told the officer he did not know his driving privileges were suspended, and said he did not have insurance for his vehicle. The officer also learned Jedkins was on probation, and was told a probation hold would be placed on him.
Officers brought Jedkins to the squad, where he asked if he could call his mother. The officers said he would have to wait until he got to the jail to make the call.
As officers tried to place him in the squad, Jedkins pulled away and began running west on 3 Mile Road in the westbound lane of traffic.
Officers chased him, pulling him onto the south shoulder, and said that he tried to head butt and kick them. They used a Taser twice to subdue him, and report that he made his body dead weight as they tried to get him to stand up.
Rescue also responded to the scene, and offered their cot to help move Jedkins to the squad.
Jedkins was taken to the hospital for treatment, and during the ride, the officer reported that he threatened to sue the officers. Later, he apologized for his behavior and said he ran away because he wanted to use the phone.
