A Racine man fled from police during a weekend traffic stop, according to court records, reaching speeds of 93 mph on Highway 31 through Caledonia.

Matthew J. Kaydo, 40, is charged with attempting to flee police, obstructing an officer, resisting an officer, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A Caledonia Police sergeant patrolling on Highway 31 approaching 4 Mile Road in Caledonia at 11:50 p.m. Friday, ran a registration check on a vehicle. The owner, Kaydo, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, and the sergeant saw the driver matched Kaydo’s description.

The criminal complaint states the sergeant pulled over the vehicle, made initial contact with Kaydo and his passenger, and returned to his squad to wait for another officer to arrive to help.

The second officer told Kaydo to turn off the car and exit, and that he had a warrant and was under arrest. The officer opened the door, but Kaydo put the car in drive and sped away, tires squealing.

Police pursued, and found Kaydo stopped in traffic at the intersection of highways 31 and 38.

Kaydo was taken into custody, but police reported he continued to resist arrest and needed to be pepper sprayed. Rescue was called afterward because he was having trouble breathing.

The passenger told police he pleaded with Kaydo to stop because he wanted no part of the chase.

Inside Kaydo’s vehicle police found 0.3 grams of marijuana and a metal marijuana pipe. He also had a glass marijuana pipe in his pocket, the complaint states.
