A Mount Pleasant Police officer was punched in the face after a fight broke out in front of Los Cantaritos tavern, 2405 Racine St., at 1:36 a.m. Saturday.

Officers patrolled the area and discovered that a fight had broken out. When the officer tried to identify the man, he became combative with police. During the struggle, Marterries Gates, 27, punched the officer in the face and damaged his body camera, according to a press release by the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Gates was arrested for battery to a police officer, criminal damage to property, two counts of resisting arrest/obstructing and disorderly conduct. Gates, who also had outstanding warrants for his arrest, was taken to the Racine County Jail.
