Jerome Paster and his seven family members were displaced following a fire at their home at 805 Jackson Street.
No one was injured in the fire, which started at 8:32 p.m. Friday, according to a press release by the Racine Fire Department.
Paster told officials that he heard a loud noise and then saw a fire near a window. As the fire alarms went off in this home, Paster and his family got out of the home. But a member of the fire crew had to stop him from going back inside to the family’s cats.
“Please remember that if you exit a house that is involved in a fire never go back in,” the press release reads.
The fire started at the ground level. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The estimated damage to the structure of the home is $20,000 and the damage to the contents is $2,500.
The Red Cross helped the family obtain temporary shelter and get supplies for them. The Racine Fire Bells also provided aid to the firefighters on scene.
