UPDATE: Racine County Judge David Paulson has ordered the owners of Sunshine Mart LLC, which operates the Sunshine Supermarket, to close its doors Friday.
Located at 1559 Taylor Avenue, the business is expected to cease operations and not open until a judge orders otherwise. Once closed, the building — which includes the business and residential units on the second level — are to be closed and boarded up. No one is also allowed to be on the property, according to court records.
ORIGINAL STORY: The owner of Sunshine Supermarket, 1559 Taylor Ave., voluntarily surrendered their liquor license after the city took issue with a number of police calls to the business.
Sunshine Mart LLC is the holding company for Sunshine Supermarket. Originally the Public Safety and Licensing Committee planned to start the revocation process on Feb. 1 against Sunshine Mart. But the matter was cancelled after the owner, Candace Ali, surrendered the license on Tuesday.
According to a press release from the city:
“This afternoon, Ms. Ali voluntarily surrendered the license. The Committee meeting is therefore cancelled. Although she has surrendered the license, it is believed that Ms. Ali intends to keep the store open, even though the store will no longer be able to offer alcoholic beverages for sale.”
The city had ordered Ali to appear before the City of Racine Public Safety and Licensing Committee on Tuesday with the intent of holding a due process hearing where the liquor license could be revoked for up to 90 days. The complaint alleged that Ali ran the business in such a way that has “created undesirable neighborhood problems because of the management and/or location of the supermarket and its associated activities.”
In the meantime, officers with the Racine Police Department plan to keep monitoring the store for any nuisance activities.
