Over 200 students received $140,000 in scholarships from the Gateway Technical College Foundation.
The awards were handed out at an annual ceremony the Foundation hosted on Feb. 4.
In total 224 scholarships were awarded to 214 students to help them meet their career and education goals. The number of students assisted increased from 199 students last year, according to a press release by Gateway Technical College.
“We are grateful for the commitment of our donors to Gateway students and the community,” said Jennifer Charpentier, executive director of the Foundation. “So many of our students share with us that they would not be in college this semester but for the generous scholarship. Others tell us this is the first time they’ve been recognized for their hard work and persistence. The scholarship awards ceremony is a joyful celebration of students pursuing their educational dreams and the thoughtful donors who support them.”
Among the awards handed out was the Bessie Children Scholarship, which has been given for 50 years to nursing students. Nicole Williams received the scholarship this year.
A new scholarship offered was the Paul J. Brandenburg Memorial Scholarship, which was started by Brandenburg’s family for new adult learners returning to school. After dropping out of high school at 16-years-old to work, Brandenburg earned his GED and then he received his bachelor’s degree. He worked in the fluid power industry for a number of years, then taught courses in the fluid power program at Gateway Technical College.
