Two people were injured in a crash involving a van and a semi-tractor trailer that happened at 12:26 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 94 just south of 27th Street.

A 40-year-old Kenosha man was driving the semi eastbound on I-94 when the driver of a van crashed into the back of the semi.  The driver of the van was trapped because part of it was underneath the trailer and it was on fire. A deputy with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department put the fire out with his fire extinguisher and started medical treatment until rescue workers from the Raymond Fire Department arrived.

The driver had to be extricated out of the van. He was taken by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. The man is still in serious condition. The semi-tractor trailer driver was taken to Ascension-All Saints Hospital and later released for minor injuries, according to a press release by the Racine County Sheriff’s Department.

 

Speed and alcohol are believe to have played a role in the crash.

Raymond Fire and Rescue, Franklin Police Department, Oak Creek Police Department, Caledonia Police Department, and the Wisconsin State Patrol also responded.
