Beach goers needing refreshment this summer at North Beach may be able to snag a pint or two of brew made by The Benjamin Beer Company.
Owner Jim Kennedy filed an application with the City of Racine to run the North Beach Oasis. The Finance and Personnel Committee reviewed the application at a meeting held Monday night. In a unanimous vote, the five-person Committee approved a recommendation that Benjamin Beer could operate the concession stand on a one-year contract that is renewable for up to two years.
The company will pay the city 15 percent of its revenue the first year to allow him to pay for some operational costs and 20 percent of its revenue the second year, explained Kathy Kasper, purchasing agent for the City of Racine.
Kennedy was the only applicant that filled out the application, she said.
“We needed to set up this contract a little differently than we had in the past… there may be some changes coming with the facility and we may get to add a facility,” she explained to the committee.
One of the issues with the site is that the facility doesn’t have a lot of potential for expansion, which restricts the type of food that can be made on the site.
Kennedy plans to offer food. But that would be restricted to quick service type food like sandwiches and french fries unless the health department OKs the facility for other uses, said Tom Molbeck, head of the parks, recreation and cultural services department.
While the Committee voted to approve the recommendation, the Common Council will still need to approve the recommendation at its next meeting.
