A man was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office Monday with drunk driving after he caused a two-car crash on Sheridan Road that injured himself and two others.

Robert Stinson, 54, Racine, was charged with intoxicated use of a vehicle-great bodily harm, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and causing injury/operating a vehicle while intoxicated. If convicted of all charges, Stinson faces up to 25 years one month in jail and/or fined up to $50,300.

The crash happened at 6:36 p.m. Saturday on Sheridan Road at Larson Street.

According to the criminal complaint, Stinson, who was driving a car northbound on Sheridan Road, crashed into a car that was turning left on to Larson Street from Sheridan Road. A 20-year-old Racine woman, who was driving the car, suffered severe, but non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses told officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department that Stinson “flew past” and one said his car “shook” as Stinson drove by them. After Stinson crashed into the woman’s car, it struck a telephone pole, starting leaking gas, and caught fire. Seeing the crash, a witness rushed to help get the woman out of the car by “carrying her to safety.”

The woman had a large gash on her arm. Crawling out of the back window of Stinson’s car, the passenger suffered injuries to their face and leg. Stinson also had a dislocated bon in his foot and bruised ribs.

Officers noted that Stinson smelled like alcohol and as they were investigating the crash, he walked away from the scene. When they caught up with him, he told them that he “only had a couple of drinks at a party in Kenosha.”

A preliminary breathalyzer test showed that his blood-alcohol level was just above the legal limit of .08 at .104.

Stinson is being held on a $15,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. June 8 in front of Racine County Court Commissioner John Bjelajac.
