A Mount Pleasant man, who led police on a high-speed chase and crashed the car he was driving into a tree, was charged Wednesday by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.
Demond Seay, 20, was charged with fleeing and eluding a traffic officer causing damage to property (repeater) and obstructing a police officer (repeater).
According to the criminal complaint, Seay, who was driving his car on Geneva St. and Albert St., cut off a police officer just after 6 p.m. Monday. He had to brake suddenly and the officer turned around to stop him. During the pursuit, Seay failed to stop for stop signs and traveled at speeds of about 50 mph.
The passenger inside Seay’s car “bailed from the car and fled on foot at Yout and Erie streets. Seay continued to blow through stop signs at Goold, Augusta, and Melvin streets and was speeding at 70 mph. Losing control of the car, the vehicle “became airborne and flipped several times before taking down a tree” in the 3000 block of Erie Street.
When the officer ran to the vehicle, he realized that Seay had fled on foot. The officer found him inside a home in the 3200 block of Erie Street after he told the resident that he was injured in a car crash. Police found Seay in a back bedroom and arrested him. He denied being involved in the car crash, but later told police he was a passenger. The car belonged to his mother and Seay had just borrowed the car.
During his initial appearance, Racine County Court Commissioner John Bjelajac set a cash bond of $10,000. A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. June 8 in Racine County Felony Court.
