A 24-year-old man with mental health issues was hospitalized after being rescued from Lake Michigan at about 11:24 a.m. Sunday.

Officials with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department Water Patrol were called to a report of a man yelling for help in Lake Michigan near the Root River, according to a press release.

The man climbed on to a jet ski, but fell off and refused help from other boaters. Concerned that he wasn’t wearing a life jacket, a person threw him a life jacket and the man was able to put it on.

Rescue personnel from the water patrol helped the man out of the water. He was breathing, but not able to answer questions. He was then taken to shore, put in an ambulance and taken to Ascension – All Saints Hospital because of his unresponsiveness and possible hypothermia.

This incident is now under investigation.
