It’s a big weekend of music in Burlington as the Tall Tales Music Festival returns for a fifth appearance. This weekend in Racine County also brings car shows, live theater, free football and lots of canines. Real Racine has some great ideas for you.
Stories and songs. Tall Tales Music Festival is back to celebrate the cultural significance of storytelling through music. These two days of free, live performances (by 17 national and regional acts) and creativity workshops will be held on Chestnut Street in Downtown Burlington Friday and Saturday. The festival stage comes to life from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. Saturday workshops for all ages (includes harmonica, ukelele, banjo playing and a cappella singing) start at 10 a.m. The main stage performances run from 1 to 11 p.m. There is also food and craft beer available for purchase. Dog days. Two area kennels clubs bring the annual, four-day All Breeds Dog Show to the Caledonia-Mount Pleasant Memorial Park, 9614 Hwy. K, Franksville. The Cudahy Kennel Club presents the show on Friday and Saturday. The Greater Racine Kennel Club‘s show is Sunday and Monday. In addition to dog judging and obedience, vendors will be on hand with all sorts of pet supplies. Show hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Free admission – parking is $5.
Two days, three shows. If you like the classics — cars, that is — you’ll have plenty of places to go this weekend. Coffee & Cars Rendevous is 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday at Roma Lodge, 7130 Spring St., Mount Pleasant. This is an informal gathering of car enthusiasts. A $5 donation is suggested. The Back to the Past Car Show takes over Main Street in Downtown Union Grove from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. More than 250 cars are expected with DJs spinning the hits. Free to show and watch. On Sunday, the Annual Car Show runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Borzynski’s Farm and Floral Market, 11600 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant. Registration is $5 per vehicle ; free for spectators. Live music by the Bluegrass All Stars.
On stage. The Young Haylofters take the stage with the musical “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” this weekend — Thursday through Sunday — and the following weekend, Aug. 17-20. In the barn. The Bonk! Performance Series visits the Eco-Justice Center, 7133 Michna Road, Caledonia, this Saturday. The barn doors open at 5:30 p.m.; performance at 6 p.m. This month features Tom Montag, poet and essayist from Fairwater, Wis., and poet Angie Trudell Vasquez. Music by Kai Andersen and the Pickups, an Americana indie rock band. Free admission.
Fan appreciation. The Racine Raiders have declared Saturday as Fan Appreciation Night. Everyone is admitted free to this MidStates Football League matchup with the Milwaukee County Chargers at Horlick Field, 1648 N. Memorial Drive. You’ll see a rare event — a football game that starts with no kickoff! That’s because this game is the continuation of a game that was halted (with the Raiders leading 3-0) in June because of a thunderstorm. The contest starts at 7 p.m. Visit www.racineraiders.com
