After confessing to a friend, a West Allis man was charged with the murder of 36-year-old Joey Torrez on Sept. 14, 2016, in the 1600 block of Holmes Avenue.
Michael Cina, 39, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. A $25,000 warrant for Cina’s arrest was issued in September. He has been in prison at the Dodge Correctional Institution since July 31 after being convicted of possessing a firearm.
He is also a suspect in a second murder in Kenosha.
According to the criminal complaint, Cina shot Torrez multiple times. Finding him injured on the grass, rescue workers from the Racine Fire Department took Torrez to Ascension — All Saints Hospital. He died six days later from the gunshot wounds.
During the investigation by the Racine Police Department, witnesses told investigators that Cina was next to Torrez’s car just prior to the shooting. They also saw him leaving after the shooting.
A video camera also recorded the shooting. It showed Torrez getting into his car, and Cina driving up next to Torrez in a blue Ford Focus. Cina shot Torrez from his car through the driver’s side window and then driving off.
Later, Cina told a friend that he killed Torrez because was a Latin King.
Cina is also a suspect in a homicide that happened in Kenosha. Police found a glove with Cina’s DNA at the crime scene. They also learned that both victims were shot with the same gun.
He is scheduled to have an initial appearance at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Racine County Courthouse.
