With the holidays quickly approaching, there are lots of things to see and do in Racine County. Watch ice carvers, take in a ballet, go for a run or enjoy dinner with Santa Claus. Real Racine is filled to the brim with holiday season ideas.
Ice becomes art. You’re invited to see ice carvers in action at the 2017 Burlington Ice Festival on Saturday. Huge (300 lb.) ice blocks will be placed in Wehmhoff Square in Downtown Burlington where 15 carvers will work their magic starting at 9 a.m. The completed carvings will be judged for prizes at around 2 p.m. You can watch the carvings take form and stroll through the decorated downtown area all day for free. Presented by the City of Burlington.
The season’s dance. See a ballet classic – “The Story of the Nutcracker.” The Studio of Classical Dance Arts presents this ballet at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday the Rita Tallent Picken Center for Arts and Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 900 Wood Road, Somers. This beautiful performance features more than 70 dancers from throughout the area. Admission is $15 adults; $8 children age 12 and younger. Advance purchase is recommended. Your last chance. The Racine Theatre Guild’s production of “A Christmas Carol: The Musical” has just four performances left this weekend. A large cast and crew presents this classic tale of how greedy Scrooge learned the true meaning of Christmas. Take a run. The annual Stuff the Sleigh 5k is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Texas Roadhouse, 6228 Durand Ave., Mount Pleasant. Runners and walkers will meet at the restaurant and follow a course through the adjacent Stewart McBride Park. Registration is $35 adults; $10 youth (ages 6 through 15). Dinner plans. Bring the family! Dinner With Santa will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Sturtevant Village Hall, 2801 89th St., Sturtevant. You’ll enjoy a mostaccioli dinner from De Rango’s and a chance to meet Santa. Admission is $8 for adults; $5 for children ages 3 through 12. Children age 2 and younger eat free. The dinner benefits the July 3 Sturtevant Fireworks Celebration.
Now at Wustum. Watercolor Wisconsin 2017 is now open at the Chas. A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, 2519 Northwestern Ave. In this 51st year for the exhibition, 104 works by 75 Wisconsin artists may be viewed. The entries include two- and three-dimensional works on paper featuring a variety of subjects. Watercolor Wisconsin runs through April 21, 2018. Free admission.
