Nearly four years after Racine Police say he stole almost $17,000 in jewelry from Shaw’s Jewelers at Regency Mall, a 50-year-old Chicago man is in custody for the theft.
Catrell Weekly, of Chicago, was charged Monday by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with one felony count of theft of movable property valued at more than $10,000. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 in fines.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called Jan. 24, 2014 to Shaw’s Jewelers for a report of theft. Employees there told them that a couple had come in the night before to look at wedding rings. While staff was showing the rings, another party – later identified as Weekly – also came into the store.
Store surveillance cameras showed a man and a woman looking at wedding rings. When Weekly enters the frame, he drapes his coat over the counter. While employees were busy with the couple, Weekly reached twice into the open display case and placed items in his pocket.
A $20,000 warrant in 2014 was issued for Weekly’s arrest. But he was incarcerated in the Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, IL, and could not appear in Racine on the charges against him. Weekly is now in custody at the Racine County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.
He will next be in court Jan. 18 for his preliminary hearing.
