UPDATE: Officials with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department released the names of the people injured in the crash and their conditions.
Racine County residents Cheryl L. Coopman, 47, and Jeffery J. Coopman, 53, remain in critical, but stable condition at Froedtert Memorial Hospital.
Mount Pleasant Police arrested18-year-old Racine resident Isiah DeGroot, the driver in the crash, who fled on foot. DeGroot was arrested for:
- Fleeing and Eluding
- Hit and Run causing Great Bodily Harm
- Hit and Run Causing Injury
- Operating Motor Vehicle without Owner Consent
- Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm)
- 1st Degree Reckless Endangering Safety
- Possession with Intent THC
- Obstructing an Officer
- Bail Jumping X9
ORIGINAL STORY: Two people were injured in a car versus pedestrians crash that happened at 10:42 a.m. Sunday in front of Festival Foods during a traffic stop.
The incident started in the Kohl’s parking lot when a deputy with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department tried to stop a car for a traffic stop. When the deputy turned on his emergency lights, the driver fled at a high rate of speed and struck two people coming out of Festival Foods. The driver then fled the area on foot, according to a press release by the Racine County Sheriff’s Department.
The deputy then turned his attention to the people who were injured and applied a tourniquet to one of the victims. He then continued to tend to their injuries until rescue personnel from the South Shore Fire Department arrived.
The suspect was then taken into custody not far from the accident scene.
“The Racine County Sheriff’s Office would like to express our thoughts and prayers to the victims of the family for a speedy and promising recovery,” the press release reads.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department is investigating the incident.
