A bench warrant has been issued against a former employee at a local restaurant after he stole over $2,000 from them by manipulating customers’ receipts.
Christopher Jones, 29, of Beach Park Il, failed to appear in court on Wednesday after being charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with two counts of theft from a business setting and two counts of computer crimes-modifying data. If convicted of all three charges, Jones faces up to eight years, five months in prison and/or fines up to $40,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Jones worked as an employee at Third Coast Wood Fire Pizza & Pub, 207 Gaslight Circle, in August 2016. The manager called the Racine Police Department because he suspected that Jones “manipulated customers’ receipts in order to pocket money.”
The manager told investigators that Jones charged customers full price for what they ordered, but then applied promotion codes to make it appear that the customer paid less for the items. Jones then pocketed the difference between the billed amount and the “falsified bill amount.”
When customers used credit cards to pay for their meals, he also applied discount codes to divert some of what they paid to him rather than the full amount going to Third Coast.
The restaurant lost over $2,000 in revenue, according to the criminal complaint.
