A Racine man was charged with several felonies after he was shot by an officer with the Racine Police Department Saturday at Tropical Paradise, 1600 Douglas Ave.
Jeremiah Golden, 32, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office on Monday with possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession of marijuana, obstructing a police officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, use of a dangerous weapon.
If convicted of all charges, Golden faces up to 42 years six months in prison and/or fined up to $130,000.
According to the criminal complaint, Racine Police were called to a report of a large group of people fighting and a person with a gun at the Tropical Paradise Bar, 1600 Douglas Ave. As police arrived, they heard several shots being fired.
Golden told police the group “turned their attention toward him.”
As he walked to his car, he pulled out a gun because the group was coming towards him. Firing three shots in the area, Golden then saw police pull up and he started running. After running past the bar, he ran into a police officer who ordered him to the ground and “put the gun away,” the complaint reads.
Golden refused to relinquish the gun he had and was shot by the officer for not complying with his orders, according to a press release by the Racine Police Department.
Officers found 23 individual bags of crack cocaine weighing a total of 7.4 grams and 4.6 grams of marijuana on him.
A witness told police he heard and saw the officer yell at Golden to stop five times, but he continued to run.
After receiving medical treatment, Golden is in custody.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
