When it comes to choosing window treatments, you’re going to encounter a variety of materials and styles. When you’re shopping for blinds, anything that can help narrow down your search will be a welcome relief.

You’re going to be asking yourself a lot of questions – and here’s an important one: When it comes to the material your blinds are made of, should you go natural or artificial?

Natural Window Treatment Materials

The two most common natural materials for blinds are wood and cloth fibers (such as linen and wool). In general, these types of blinds add a certain elegance and charm to a room and are great choices if you’re going for a certain type of décor, such as airy, warm, traditional or rustic.

Artificial Window Treatment Materials

Artificial blinds are generally made of plastic (e.g. vinyl shades). These are perhaps the most popular and widely used types of blinds, as they provide a good level of versatility and value. These blinds are typically more affordable and come in a greater range of colours and styles that can match any room.

The Benefits of Natural Materials

Natural window treatment materials offer a host of unique benefits for the savvy homeowner. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider them for your home:

  1. They are lighter

In terms of weight, natural fiber and wood blinds are generally lighter and easier to operate as a result. Wood blinds are also rigid and resist bending and buckling better than vinyl shades.

  1. They are biodegradable

If eco-friendliness is a concern, natural window treatments are a good choice. Vinyl is not great for the environment, both in it’s production and disposal.

  1. They look amazing

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but generally speaking natural fiber and wood blinds have an instantly recognizable look that conveys a sense of elegance, quality and integrity. This can increase the value of your home. Vinyl and faux-wood shades might not have the same effect.

The Benefits of Artificial Materials

  1. Lower Cost

There’s no getting around it: blinds made out of plastic are just more affordable. They are easily mass produced and offer good value for your money.

  1. Versatility

Vinyl blinds come in a greater array of colours than natural window treatments, which typically stick to neutral colours and earth tones. Wood obviously has a specific range of looks and feels, and natural fiber blinds are typically found in lighter, more airy colours. Vinyl blinds can fit into a wider variety of decors as a result.

  1. Moisture-resistant

If you’re looking for blinds to install in a splash zone or anywhere they would be exposed to water and moisture, artificial materials are the way to go. Wood has a tendency to warp when exposed to moisture and humidity, and vinyl blinds are easier to clean and maintain.

When it comes to customization, both natural and artificial window treatment materials are fine. Wood might have the edge in larger windows due to their resistance to bowing or sagging, but essentially both materials can be tailored to fit any type of window. They both also come with a variety of options such as motorization, so it’s worth looking into that when making your choice.
