Sister Lucy Edelbeck, O.P., 95, passed away at Lakeshore Manor in Racine on Thursday.
Eleanore Christine was born October 18, 1922 to Anton J. and Caroline (nee: DeGroot) Edelbeck in Wausaukee, WI. On August 29, 1939 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1940 she was given the religious name Sister Lucy. She professed her first vows in 1942 and her final vows in 1948.
Sister Lucy spent many years in service to others in teaching and ministry with young adults and women. She began her ministry in 1942 at St. Charles, Burlington, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Catherine High School and Dominican College, Racine; St. John High School, Little Chute; and Marquette University, Milwaukee. She also served in Michigan, Louisiana and Illinois. In Milwaukee she ministered to young adults and women and the neighborhood. For many years she had a greeting card ministry. In August 2013 she moved to Siena Center, Racine. In April 2018 she became a resident at Lakeshore Manor.
Sister Lucy is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her sisters Betty Novak and Rose (Ernie) Ryczek; sister-in-law Bette Ann Edelbeck and brother-in-law Robert (Sarge) Dessart; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers Bernard, Fred, Harold, Dick and Edward and sisters Celia Edelbeck, Theresa Dessart, Catherine DeLaet and Sister Eleanore Edelbeck O.P.
A Memorial Service will be in the Siena Center Chapel, 5635 Erie St. on Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment took place at Our Lady of the Oaks Cemetery in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.
