Get ready for fun, new additions to Open House Racine County (OHRC), coming Saturday, May 5. Presented by Real Racine, the county’s destination marketing organization, OHRC is a free exploration of nearly 60 interesting places.

Among the new sites for 2018 are the Modine-Benstead Observatory in rural Yorkville, the historic DeKoven Center overlooking Lake Michigan, Gateway Technical College’s SC Johnson iMET Center and Putzmeister America, a manufacturer of huge truck-mounted concrete pumps in Sturtevant.

Other additions this year include The Covenant at Murray Mansion, an 1870s Italianate-style home that is now a special event space; the Racine County Courthouse, where visitors can tour a fourth floor ceremonial courtroom and see beautiful views from the tenth floor; and Sturtevant Rails, a railroad heritage museum housed in a former Milwaukee Road caboose.

Visitors to OHRC will also have access to popular sites from last year’s event, including the world-renowned Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Wingspread home in Wind Point, the SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower in Racine, the Chocolate Experience Museum in downtown Burlington and Oak Clearing Farm (featured on the cable TV show “American Pickers”) near Union Grove.

Also new for 2018 is the Racine County Itinerary Passport Contest. Visitors who collect passport stamps at five of eight select sites (including the Real Racine Visitor Center, 14015 Washington Ave., Yorkville) will be eligible for a drawing to win a basket of Racine County gifts. In addition, OHRC visitors may have their photos published in the 2019 Real Racine Activities Guide. Photos from May 5 should be submitted to Instagram using the hashtag #OHRC2018.

Most OHRC locations will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Specific times, location descriptions and photos are on the OHRC website ( Look for the OHRC banner outside each location. Visitors will be greeted by representatives from each site.
