Why is it the poets, essayist and social commentators fall all over themselves praising moms on Mother’s Day, but a month later, when it comes time to honor Dad on Father’s Day, they turn snarky or sarcastic? For every sweet poem, quote or saying relating to mom, there are 10 that take a shot at Pops.

It’s nothing new. One of America’s most beloved writers, Mark Twain, got the ball rolling two centuries ago when wrote: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant, I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

And the snark has continued to this day. Comedian/author Jon Stewart puts it bluntly: “Fatherhood is great because you can ruin someone from scratch.”

There is, of course, the traditional teenager’s opinion of Father’s Day: It’s just like Mother’s Day only you don’t spend as much. Well, teenagers–and kids of all ages–get that idea out of your heads.

You can still give Dad a sarcastic card if you wish, but if you stop there, there may be some payback in your future. Remember, at some point you may want to tap the old man for the deposit for your first apartment or to co-sign a car loan. And when your car breaks down in Minnesota, he will drive to your rescue.

So, give it a little thought, and seek out a nice gift for your father. You don’t have to spend hundreds, but you do have to spend a little time. Lucky for you, a number of First Friday Downtown Racine businesses have ideas for you. Check out these gifts for Dad.
