An accidental shooting with a loaded firearm in June led to a pair of criminal charges filed Wednesday against a 26-year-old Racine man.
Cody L. Pilcher was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with a felony count of injury by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon and a misdemeanor count of knowingly violating a domestic abuse injunction.
The felony carries a fine of $10,000 and three years, six months in prison. The misdemeanor carries a fine of $10,000 and nine months in county jail.
According to the criminal complaint:
Police responded to a residence June 2 in Racine where they saw a man sitting on a patio chair with a gunshot wound to his foot.
Pilcher told police he was in the garage, when one of his friends picked up a gun to look at it. The friend ejected the magazine but was unsure if he put it back in the gun and gave it back to the defendant, who pulled the slide back, and when he let it go, it fired.
Court records indicate the misdemeanor charge was filed because of a domestic abuse injunction against the defendant that prohibited him from owning any firearms until Aug. 28. Pilcher told police he was unaware of the restriction.
Pilcher will be back in Racine County Circuit Court on July 18 for an adjourned initial appearance at 1:30 p.m.
