A second Racine man has been charged in a July 22 shooting at the Tropical Paradise Bar.
Jameel Ardell Cunningham, 40, was charged Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court with three felony counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon as a repeat offender.
Each charge carries a fine of $25,000 and 10 years in prison.
The other defendant, Ricky D. Haynes, 47, was charged with two felony counts of first-degree reckless injury with the use of a dangerous weapon, attempted first-degree intentional homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Haynes, who is in custody on a $100,000 bond, faces a total fine of $125,000 and 120 years in prison if convicted. He also has a preliminary hearing Aug. 15 at 8:30 a.m.
According to the criminal complaint:
Officers responded to the Tropical Paradise Bar, 1600 Douglas Ave., where they located three injured people, including the defendant, who was on the sidewalk bleeding from gunshot wounds. All three were transported to the hospital.
Police spoke with Haynes, who said an individual had threatened him in the past and threatened to kill him while they were inside the bar. While that was going on, the defendant stated another individual put a gun in his pocket.
Using surveillance from inside the bar, police identified Cunningham as the man who put the gun in Haynes’ pocket. During a search of his residence July 23, police found two 9mm pistols.
Cunningham admitted he was at the bar the night of the shooting and that he saw Haynes there as well.
He denied giving Haynes a gun and said he didn’t know who did. Cunningham also stated the guns were his brother’s and they were in a room that nobody uses. Court records indicate that Cunningham was convicted of felony possession of marijuana in 2012 and felony delivery of marijuana in May. The convictions prevent him from legally owning a firearm.
In speaking to witnesses and reviewing video surveillance, officers determined that Haynes moved in the direction of another man outside the bar, raised his hand and fired a gun. The man could be seen ducking and moving, and then Haynes went to the ground after he appeared to get shot.
Police determined that an unknown person attempted to defend the man and fired a shot at Haynes. Bullets also struck two other men. Haynes then fired back while he was on the ground.
Cunningham, who is being held on a $50,000 bond, will be back in court Aug. 15 for an 8:30 a.m. preliminary hearing.
