A 58-year-old Racine man who stabbed his roommate several times Saturday over unpaid rent was charged Monday in Racine County Circuit Court with two criminal charges.

Jerry W. Franklin faces a felony count of first-degree reckless injury, which carries a fine of $100,000 and 25 years in prison, along with a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, which carries a fine of $1,000 and 90 days in county jail.

According to the criminal complaint: The victim told police that he and Franklin got into a verbal argument concerning rent. During the argument, the defendant attacked him with a knife and stabbed him several times in the chest. Officers observed multiple knife wounds, and the victim was bleeding profusely from his chest and mouth.

Rescue personnel on scene gave the victim preliminary medical treatment before he was transported via Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa.

Franklin told police that he and the victim got into an argument regarding his argument, and during the argument, he pulled a knife out of his back pocket and stabbed him.

He is scheduled to return for a preliminary hearing Sept. 6 at 8:30 a.m.
