A 26-year-old Racine man faces a felony charge of a hit and run causing great bodily harm after a traffic accident Saturday.
The felony filed Monday in Racine County Circuit Court against DeAndre J. Loy carries a fine of $50,000 and 15 years in prison. Loy also is charged with a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer, which carries a fine of $10,000 and nine months in county jail.
According to the criminal complaint:
Racine police officers were dispatched to Byrd and Perry Avenues for a hit and run.
Police spoke to the victim, who stated she was making a left turn from Perry to Byrd Avenue, and as she went through the stop sign, a white van traveling westbound struck her passenger side front bumper and quarter panel.
The woman stated the van stopped briefly, but then continued westbound on Byrd Avenue. A passenger in the woman’s vehicle complained of severe leg pain and a sore chest from the seat belt.
Police found the van in a parking lot with heavy passenger side and front right tire damage. Witnesses stated the defendant exited the vehicle and ran into a home on Byrd Avenue.
As the vehicle was being towed, Noy approached police, who stated he matched the description of the driver. Noy denied he had been driving and told police he let his cousin drive the vehicle and had no idea if it was involved in a hit and run.
The defendant’s cousin initially told police she had been driving, but then stated she was a passenger and that Noy was the driver. Noy continued to deny that he was the driver and was taken into custody.
Noy is due in court Oct. 4 for a preliminary hearing.
