A 26-year-old Racine woman is accused of causing injuries to an infant left in her care between April and May.

Kristin N. Kreiman was charged Wednesday in Racine County Circuit Court with felony charges of physical abuse of a child and physical abuse of a child intentionally causing bodily harm.

If convicted, she faces a $110,000 fine and 46 years in prison.

According to the criminal complaint:

An investigator with the Racine Police Department was advised that the child, who at the time was four months ago, was taken to her family doctor and then to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee by her parents for concerns about an injury to her arm.

In May, an x-ray showed that the child suffered fractures to her forearm. Those injuries are generally caused by an impact of bending of the bone and they are not consistent with normal care and handling of an infant, according to a doctor who examined her.

The doctor further stated the injury is “indicative of inflicted trauma and physical abuse.”

Police spoke to the mother, who stated that about one month prior, she was contacted by Kreiman about an injury the child had sustained to her mouth. The defendant stated the injury happened when the child “bopped” a wooden teething toy into her mouth.

The mother also stated there had been bruises on the child’s cheek and temple area at different times.

Kreiman stated the bruising probably occurred when the child was thrashing around in her jumper and hit her head on the side of it – but the doctor stated that a child that age would not be able to generate enough force sufficient to result in a lip or gum laceration.

The defendant told police she had never slipped with a child in her arms nor had she ever dropped a child.

She said she didn’t have any idea how the child would have injured her arm and stated there was never a time when she heard the child cry in pain.

Kreiman, who is free on a $10,000 signature bond, is due back in court Oct. 3 for an 8:30 a.m. preliminary hearing.
