Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. has been set as the open house at the Root River Steelhead Facility in Lincoln Park, 2200 Domanik Drive, Racine.
The public is encouraged to attend this event, whether you’re a novice angler, a veteran angler, or just like to eat fish!
Enjoy guided tours of the facility with DNR crews demonstrating how they collect eggs from trout and salmon to produce the next generation of fish to test Lake Michigan anglers. Participate in fishing rod casting lessons, knot tying, fly-tying, and more.

Give the fish a hand
Lake Michigan trout and salmon don’t successfully reproduce in Wisconsin streams, so DNR gives Mother Nature a hand. Watch fisheries crews collect eggs and milt from spawning fish to create the next generation of steelhead to challenge anglers.
Fishing pressure remains moderate
Root River continues to be heavily fished by both local and non-local anglers. Fishing pressure remains moderate to high with the highest level of pressure still in found in Lincoln Park near the weir. Weather conditions have yet to improve as snow showers and freezing rain have dampened the morale of anglers.
Steelhead remains the top target yet no success was reported during survey times. The final process day at the Root River Weir was April 16 After that date fish could freely swim up and down the Root River without passing through the weir. The Root River Weir will be back in place this fall for the Chinook run.
