According to the Racine Police Department two children were attacked and injured by a pit bull Wednesday.

According to Sgt. Adam Malacara, RPD officers responded around 9 a.m. to a report of a dog attack and shots being fired in the 700 block of Sydney Drive. According to Malacara, two children were walking to a bus stop when they were attacked by the dog. A nearby resident heard the children screaming and saw the dog attacking them.

He rushed to help the children aid and scared the dog away from them, but the dog turned on him; he fired one round at the dog. The bullet grazed the dog, reportedly, and it fled.

The children, who suffered injuries, were taken to Ascension All Saints Hospital to be treated.

The citizen who came to their aid had a valid concealed-carry permit, according to the police. The dog’s owner was cited for having an animal at large, and the dog was captured by Police Department community service officers.
