The Racine County Sheriff’s Office will again take part in the statewide Drug Take Back Day event this year. Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimmel and Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling met at the Racine County Patrol Station to speak about the Drug Take Back event set for this Saturday, Oct. 27. Racine Police Chief Art Howell and Caledonia Police Chief Daniel Reilly were also on hand to show their support for the event.

Medications that are disposed of by flushing down the drain or thrown into the trash become an ever-increasing public health concern as these chemicals can contaminate water supplies and the wildlife Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to filter all medications from the wastewater.

Unused medications lingering in household medicine cabinets also are vulnerable to diversion, misuse and abuse. The abuse of prescription medications is alarmingly high which can lead to addiction, overdosing and death.

The Drug Take Back Day event not only helps the environment but also reduces the possibility of unused medications be abused.

“All of us need to prioritize prevention, treatment and law enforcement to address this crisis that this state faces in every single community in our state and without focusing on enforcement, treatment and prevention, we will never beat this that is why we are following a comprehensive approach,” said Schimel.

“I have no doubt that we will see less overdose deaths due to these lifesaving initiatives,” added Schmaling.

As this is a statewide event, you can also find other participating locations.

In coordination with the Department of Justice, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office along with the listed Law Enforcement Agencies below have medication drop boxes for residents to dispose of unwanted medications. The boxes are located at following locations. Please check with the agency for times of availability.
