Racine County Sheriff’s unit responded to early Thursday morning reports of a semi-truck flipped on its side in the northbound lanes of Interstate 94/41 just south of Wisconsin Highway 11 across the road from Apple Holler Restaurant.
Several callers notified the Racine County Communications Center just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
The truck blocked both northbound lanes and was lying against the median wall, according to a release from the Racine County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies arrived on the scene and found that the accident actually involved two semi-trucks.
Upon investigating the scene deputies determined the crash was a fatal accident. Investigators found that one of the trucks was stopped on the highway, possibly due to a flat tire. The other semi-truck struck the stopped vehicle, causing the stopped truck to flip on its side.
The driver of the stopped vehicle was transported to Ascension Hospital in Racine. The operator of the striking vehicle was found dead in the cab of his truck.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information was available from the Sheriff’s Department. In the short term, southbound interstate traffic was diverted off at Highway 11 and northbound interstate traffic was diverted off at at Kenosha County Highway E.
