Dr. Suess’ famous Christmas story is born again in this latest 3D computer-animated interpretation, The Grinch (2018), produced by Illumination, the same production team that worked on the Despicable Me films. It is the story’s third screen adaptation.

What’s the movie about?

Created in 1957, this story is one of the author’s most famous works. It’s likely that your school teacher read this book to you and your classmates. The movie has solidified its place among the Christmas classics and has become a perennial treat. Narrated in rhyme, the story has withstood the test of time. Now don’t have a fit, let me tell you all about it.

The Grinch (Benedict Cumberbatch), a curmudgeon of green color, is a sourpuss about the Christmas holiday because of his loneliness and events that took place in his past. His heart is two sizes too small and he finds the ideas of happiness and joy disgusting. As such, the Grinch sets out to ruin the holiday for all the people of Whoville, a small town at the base of the mountain in which he lives. He accomplishes this by dressing up as Santa Claus and stealing all the Christmas lights, trees, and gifts from every house in Whoville. Little does the Grinch know that a young girl named Cindy Lou Who (Cameron Seely) awaits his arrival and will change his life forever.

Our take on The Grinch Steals Christmas

Despite having years to improve upon the original story, this film fails to provide anything unique or interesting. It’s not funny and provides no additional charm. If you want to want nostalgia, you’re better off watching the original animated television special, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966). If you want laughs, check out the live-action movie by the same name starring Jim Carrey (2000). Skip this film. It isn’t worth the ticket price.

Genre: Animation, Comedy
Rating: 2.75/5
