A 34-year-old Mount Pleasant man faces three criminal charges, including a felony count of hit and run causing injury after a blood sample determined he was more than three times the legal limit.

The felony, filed Thursday in Racine County Circuit Court against Kevin Scott Leicht, carries a fine of $10,000 and nine years in prison.

Leicht also is charged with misdemeanor counts of operating while intoxicated and operating with a prohibited alcohol content, both causing injury. The misdemeanors each carry a fine of $2,000 and one year in county jail.

According to the criminal complaint: Mount Pleasant police officers were dispatched Nov. 28 at approximately 7:00 p.m. to the intersection of Cozy Acres Road and Durand Avenue for a report of an automobile accident.

Police spoke with the victim, who stated she was preparing to turn left onto Cozy Acres Road when the defendant’s vehicle ran into her from behind. The impact forced her into oncoming traffic, and her face struck the steering wheel in her vehicle.

The woman stated she was able to drive her car off the road and saw the car that hit her strike a stop sign, then drive east on Durand Avenue.

A witness followed Leicht’s vehicle, and officers located him as he exited his vehicle. Police observed that the vehicle had heavy front-end damage and a cracked windshield.

As police spoke to the defendant, they observed that he had slurred speech and a strong odor of intoxicants came from inside the vehicle.

Leicht failed a series of field sobriety tests, and a portable breath test at the scene revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.289. A blood draw was conducted at a local hospital, and that showed a BAC of .0.278.
The defendant was slated to be in court Thursday for an initial appearance.
