A 20-year-old Racine man who was convicted in 2015 of second-degree sexual assault of a child faces a new felony count in Racine County Circuit Court.
Nicholas D. Colburn was charged Thursday with tampering with a global positioning system tracking device, along with a misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.
The felony carries a fine of $10,000 and three years, six months in prison, while the misdemeanor carries a fine of $10,000 and nine months in county jail.
According to the criminal complaint: On Oct. 24, the Department of Corrections Monitoring Center received an alert that Colburn’s GPS unit had possibly been removed. As part of Colburn’s two-year prison sentence in the 2015 case, he was ordered to comply with lifetime GPS tracking.
The unit was recovered near 1214 Center St., in Racine, by a DOC agent. The unit, which was found in tall weeds, continued to transmit its location, but the defendant was not in the area.
Court records indicate a $10,000 arrest warrant was issued for Colburn, who was returned on that warrant and in custody for an initial appearance Thursday afternoon.
