Having a hard time landing a job? Feeling stressed out by the interview process? Below are a few job interview tips to help you ace your next interview. Our guide on how to have a successful job interview will cover all the basics you’ll need to make a great first impression.
Preparation for the job interview
Do Some Background Research
Before you interview, do a quick Google search of the company if you aren’t very familiar with them. Go into an interview with a general idea of what the company does and the products or services they offer.
It’s common for companies to ask questions about your background knowledge on them, why you want to work for them, and so on, but they don’t expect you to be an expert—it’s not necessary to perform hours of research.
Prepare Your Own Questions
No matter the interview, you’ll want to show up with a few smart questions to ask the person interviewing you. This practice shows that you’ve looked into the company and are serious about joining their team. Have at least one or two questions prepared. If you say you don’t have any, the interviewer could assume that you’re not that interested in the position.
Practice Common Questions
If you’ve been interviewing for a while now, you’ve probably noticed that you’re answering similar questions every time.
We recommend researching the hundreds of common interview questions asked by employers and using them to practice for the real thing. Pick the ones you think you’re most likely to encounter and prepare how you’ll answer them in person.
The Main Event
Get There Early
Try to arrive at your interview location 15 minutes early. This should give you enough time to figure out where you’re supposed to go, and it shows the interviewer that you’re punctual, prepared, and respectful towards the process.
Bring a Copy of Your Resume
Even if you sent in a digital application, be sure to bring a physical copy of your resume to every interview. It’s always a good thing to have a backup copy, just in case the interviewer misplaced theirs. It also shows that you come prepared for any situation.
Have a Positive Attitude
Show up to your interview energized and enthusiastic. Remember to tell the interviewer that you appreciate their time and that you’ve been looking forward to meeting with them. From the moment you walk in the door until the moment you leave, put your best foot forward.
Be Aware of Your Body Language
First impressions are everything. Always dress appropriately, make eye contact, and speak clearly. You want the interviewer to focus on your qualifications, so do everything in your power to make sure they aren’t distracted by any sign of tiredness, disinterest, etc.
Post-Interview
Send a Thank You
Take the time to send a thank you to the interviewer within the first 48 hours after you meet with them. If you can, send a hand-written letter. It reinforces your interest in the position and shows the interviewer that you’re willing to put time and effort into the company.
Follow these job interview tips and you’ll be sure to have a successful interview experience—and hopefully get a job offer! Taking time to prepare will save you plenty of time and stress in the long run.
