Customers who relied on the pharmacy at the Shopko store at 4801 Washington Ave. are now scrambling to find a new source to fill their prescriptions.
The pharmacy closed permanently at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The Shopko pharmacy is just one 42 units closed by the chain. Pharmacies in Kenosha and 23 other Wisconsin cities also closed. They were part of the fallout of the cascading financial woes of the Green Bay-based regional big box retailer. Other pharmacy closings have occurred in Nebraska, Idaho, Washington, Utah and Montana.
Racine Shopko pharmacy customers have had their records transferred to the Pick ‘n Save store at 2820 S. Green Bay Road in Mount Pleasant.
Pick ‘n Save is owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger Company, which purchased the records. Customers, of course, are free to have their records transferred to any pharmacy of their choice.
Published reports note that Shopko could file for bankruptcy protection as soon as today. Court records show a pharmaceutical drug supplier claims Shopko owes it nearly $70 million for medications supplied to the retailer in November and December.
