Accusations that a Racine Police officer used excessive force against at Park High School student in a 2015 incident led to charges against the officer. Now, 38-year-old Brinelle Nabors is in the first days of a trial where he is facing charges of felony misconduct in public office and misdemeanors for battery and disorderly conduct, according to a report in the Racine Journal Times.
According to the published report, charges arose from a November 2015, incident at Park High School. Nabors was at the school in his capacity as a security officer. According to newspaper accounts, Nabors was told that a 14-year-old student had “lean,” liquid concoction, which typically is a codeine-based cough syrup, or other product.
Nabors, the newspaper noted, allegedly put the student on the lunchroom floor and handcuffed him. As Nabors and another officer headed to the principal’s office with the student, Nabors allegedly struck the student in the face and held him against a locker, according to the criminal complaint.
Nabors, has been on paid suspension since the incident, alleged that the student showed signs of resistance, which prompted Nabors’ response.
A special prosecutor from the Kenosha District Attorney’s Office offered only brief opening remarks Wednesday. explaining to jurors why he was trying the case instead of Racine County prosecutors.
