A Racine man was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office Monday with first-degree reckless homicide after a man died from an overdose.
Joshua Hudy, 28, of Racine, was charged with first-degree reckless homicide, repeater. If convicted of the charge, Hudy faces up to 40 years in prison and/or fines up to $100,000.
Racine County Judge Peggy Laufenberg set a $100,000 cash bond in court on Monday.
According to the criminal complaint, a Racine man was found dead from an overdose in a residence in the 1700 block of 21st Street on March 29. The man was found with two needles, one in his hand and the other between his legs.
During the course of the investigation, officers learned that Hudy sold the man one-half of a gram of heroin by looking through the text messages on his phone. He drove all three of them to Milwaukee to a Red Roof Inn, went to his source and bought the drugs for the three people.
Hudy told police he did not know the man who died and that he did not drive them to Milwaukee. He also denied being connected to or being involved with any drug transaction.
“Due to all of the evidence obtained, Hudy is being charged with first-degree reckless homicide for delivering the controlled substance that caused or was a substantial factor in causing C.B.’s death,” the complaint reads.
A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. April 17.
