John Hetland Racine Police Department

RACINE, WI – The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, the lead agency investigating the shooting death of Racine Police officer John Hetland, is asking neighbors living around Teezers Bar for help in the investigation.

Hetland, a 24-year veteran of the Racine Police Department, was shot during an armed robbery that happened at 9:40 p.m. June 17 at Teezer’s Bar, 1936 Lathrop Avenue.

Racine Police and other law enforcement agencies immediately launched a manhunt. The shooter remains at-large.

“The Detectives assigned to the Officer Hetland homicide case are asking that anyone within a ½ mile radius of Teezers Bar whose home or business is equipped with security cameras or doorbell cameras to check the saved footage on their systems. We are interested in any suspicious activity during the evening of June 17 through the early morning of June 18. Citizens who notice anything suspicious on that video footage should preserve the video and immediately contact Crimestoppers at 262-656-7333.”

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department is asking the public to report:

  • Did they see something in the area before or after the crime?
  • Have they heard reliable rumors?
  • Were people they know out and about in the area the night of the crime?
  • Is there a friend or family member that is suddenly unaccounted for?
  • Suspicious activity by people they may suspect?
  • Names of suspects.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department also released more photos of the suspect.

The suspect is described as a black male, who is in his 20s, about 5-foot eight inches tall and 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black neoprene motorcycle bandanna and a navy blue hooded sweatshirt.

A $70,500 reward has been established for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the suspect.

Funeral details for John Hetland

With Rev. Kara Baylor officiating, a funeral service for Hetland, with full police honors, will be heldat 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carthage College – A.F. Siebert Chapel, 2001 Alford Park Drive.  Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park.

Public visitation will be held 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carthage College Siebert Chapel.
