The mission of Prevent Blindness Wisconsin is to prevent blindness and preserve sight. Our vision is for each Wisconsin resident to have healthy vision at every stage of life.
Founded in 1958, Prevent Blindness Wisconsin has provided free certified vision screenings to over 7 million children and adults throughout Wisconsin.
Our vision health model reaches across the lifespan through work with partners such as Head Start organizations, school nurses, pediatricians, optometrists, and ophthalmologists, adult services providers, corporate sponsors, and a wonderful team of volunteers. Through work with our grant funders in Racine County, we are able to provide free certified vision screenings to all 4k/5k students in the Racine Unified School District (RUSD).
We are also working closely with RUSD and local providers to help get kids to the eye doctor. Our office works with a number of voucher programs that assist both adults and children who don’t have vision insurance. Thanks to the dedication of our grant funders we are looking to greatly expand our work in Racine County. We plan on creating new educational materials for parents with children under the age of three about vision development, we will train and certify more volunteers as children’s vision screener in order to expand the vision screening program to schools where there is not a school nurse to provide services, and we will provide more community-based educational presentations on adult vision concerns.
Our vision is for each Wisconsin resident to have healthy vision for a lifetime.
A wonderful way to promote healthy vision in Wisconsin is to become a certified vision screener. Volunteers screen in preschools, elementary schools, community, and senior centers. 1 in 4 children have a vision problem, yet 86% have never seen an eye doctor. Certified Vision Screening is an important step to getting kids the vision care they need to see their best to learn, play and grow.
You can be a part of a great group of volunteers dedicated to helping students have the best vision possible. If you prefer to work with the adult population, we also offer adult vision screenings. Vision screenings help uninsured, low-income adults start on the path to healthy vision. We always accept donations through our website Wisconsin.preventblindness.org or join us for fun events we hold throughout the year like our family fun walk held each summer
