RACINE, WI — Plans to raze the old Racine Lakefront YMCA site and replace it with a new mixed-use development — including a new YMCA — are now dead.

Under the original plans announced in February, two developers intended to purchase the property and develop it, with the YMCA becoming a tenant of the property.

According to a Journal Times report this week, the developers shifted their focus to building an apartment complex on the 1500 block of Clark Street, and effectively shelved the YMCA project.

The YMCA moved out of the Lakefront branch earlier this year, however does not have any plans to return.

The existing Downtown YMCA was built in 1960, and has become outdated, officials said.
