Flex Fitness Center, 2400 Rapids Drive, is under new ownership. Saray Hernandez bought the gym from Rick Schue, who owned it for 27 years. Hernandez worked at the gym when she was in high school and Shue was a mentor to her.

The gym has been known as a bodybuilding and powerlifting gym, but under her ownership she is focused on helping people reach their fitness goals no matter what level they are at.

We asked her these five questions.

What is the primary focus of your business?

Our focus at Flex is to provide motivating workout environment for everyone from beginner gym-goer, as well as experienced athletes. We are building a health and wellness facility for all members of the community.

Why did you start your business?

I took over an existing business in Racine to preserve our unique environment and welcome more members of the community to Flex. We are changing the stigma against “bodybuilding and powerlifting gyms” to a place where anyone who is serious about getting results for their fitness goals can get the support and knowledge they need to achieve them.

What makes it special?

Flex is now a female-owned gym that is dedicated to supporting our members’ personal wellness needs through fitness and self-self-care. We have personal trainers willing to do in-home consultations to help members of the community feel more comfortable joining our fitness community. In addition to our gym, we have a pro-shop with supplements to help our members reach their wellness goals. We also hope to have massage therapy available by the end of the year.

Why did you chose that location?

Other than Flex, there is only one other gym on the northside of Racine. We are accessible to people on this side of town, as well as people looking for a gym with a variety of equipment where they can come, get an efficient workout in and to get the results they need.

What can clients expect when they come to your business?

Walking into Flex, you can expect to be greeted by welcoming staff and a facility that can meet all of your fitness needs.
