As a professional matchmaker in the Milwaukee and Racine area, I get asked this question all the time.

At a recent seminar teaching men how to date, we had a very open forum with a Q and A portion, and the same question kept coming up-where do I meet people if I’m not looking online?

Everyone is tired of the bar scene….

One can only drink so much coffee….

The laundromat proves you are living in an apartment (or your parents’ basement!) without laundry facilities….

The gym…..who wants to start chatting it up with sweat running down their face and their body odor at its peak? Yes, it’s a great space to meet people who are also into fitness, but most people want to do just that, work out!

This is both a hard question to answer as well as an easy one. And, if I knew the answer, I would be the wealthiest and busiest woman alive. I can tell you this though:

  1. You won’t meet someone by sitting on your couch watching Netflix. Back in the day, going to the video store and hitting a cute member of the opposite sex up for an opinion on a movie was all the rage…and an easy way to meet. Miss or Mr. Dreamboat don’t know your address yet. GET OUT!
  2. You have to get out of your home. And, while you are at it, you need to get out of your comfort zone. Have you considered doing something you have never tried-like bowling? Curling?
  3. You must smile. I have met many men wearing my early morning dog walking outfits, which I can say are simply the most UNSEXY ensembles walking the face of the earth…..BUT, I greet people with a huge smile and my smile is my welcome mat. I’ve met many a man by doing this….perhaps because my gorgeous standard poodle is my wing-woman!
  4. Volunteering, going to seminars, being out and about with friends and taking a class is the best way to meet others of the opposite sex. If you are doing volunteer work, you are meeting like-minded people and can easily strike up conversations without too much effort. When you attend a seminar, you get to ask others their opinions on the content and being out with friends provides a safety net if you want to be brazened and start up a conversation. Basically, they have your back. And if you take a class, there are at least 3 weeks of possibly getting to know someone. (or someone who may know someone)

So, get out, put that smile on your face, and go out and enjoy the beautiful season we are having. The worst-case scenario you will have is enjoying your own good company and seeing something magical.
